Capture the ultimate essence of early American holiday traditions with this exceptionally rare, authentic antique 1906 Halloween postcard. Published by the renowned Tower M. & N. Co. of New York, this card is a masterpiece of vintage holiday ephemera featuring a heavily embossed border completely framed by glowing jack-o'-lanterns.
The classic centerpiece illustration depicts a traditional Edwardian Halloween gathering: a young woman sits by a roaring fireplace hearth, a tall grandfather clock rests in the center ticking towards midnight, and another young woman and boy engage in the timeless tradition of bobbing for apples in a wooden wash tub. Eerily rising out of the bottom section are the silhouettes of multiple ghostly apparitions.
A fascinating feature of this specific design is the open parchment-style scroll at the bottom of the front illustration, intentionally left open for short greetings. This card features a handwritten period note in elegant fountain ink: "Well how do you enjoy yourself. From Laura R. Schaner."
The reverse side shows an undivided back postmarked October 1907 in Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania, complete with a green 1-cent Benjamin Franklin postage stamp addressed to Miss Elsie Troutman. The entire border pattern—including the fireplace, tub, and grandfather clock—is deeply stamped, giving the reverse side a beautiful, sculptural relief appearance.
