German Porcelain Figural Elephant Covered Jar Deco Period Schafer Vater Attr.

Wonderful porcelain figural covered jar in the shape of an elephant with great polychrome paint. Probably intended as a tobacco jar humidor but would function as a vanity or sugar jar as well. Attributed to Shafer Vater, note the acute attention to detail so reminiscent of many other S&V whimsical figural animals, whether nippers, creamers, or knickknacks, suggests that the famous German porcelain works may well have produced this fine old jar. The eyes are nearly a perfect match for the highly collectible figural pitchers of the Deco era.
