Self Portrait with a Hat Peter Paul Rubens After Rubens Oil Painting on Canvas UFFIZI Wax Seal
$4,121.25$5,495.00
An outstanding oil on canvas rendition of the infamous self portrait of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), titled “Self’Portrait With a Hat,” housed in a very elaborate wood carved ornate gold gilt frame.
The panting is extremely well executed with a very talented hand as can be seen in the brush strokes and use of color and shadowing. Signed on the reverse "Scarselli Anita" with a catalog number and the Uffizi wax seal “Galleria Degli Uffizi” on the verso. According to a specialist of Old Masters this wax seal was placed on replica paintings that were authorized by the Uffizi Studio in Florence, Italy. This was a common practice between 1840-1940 when the Uffizi Gallery would allow talented and skilled artists in their employ to copy certain paintings for the sale to art collectors who wished to own a copy of famous works. The practice became popular in the 1700s by King Charles who commissioned over 40 works of art to be copied and hung in his residence. It was quite the "to do" to have an authorized replica of a painting from the museum.
